"English as a Lingua Franca" (ELF) is the use of English interchanged among people
who do not share their first languages.
Not to mention, English has become an international language,
and people from different lingua-cultural backgrounds now use and share English among them.
Millions of English speakers and writers in the current world use first languages other than English .
They express their thoughts in English so that they can connect with their friends from all over the world.
Under English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) context,
English becomes the language of not only its native speakers but also everyone.
ELF places the ownership of English to everyone,
this, in a way, ELF takes the ownership of English away from everyone.
English belongs to everyone,
and no one.
English is becoming more fluid and dynamic than we could ever imagine.
ELF takes out the social and economical power of English,
but it contributes to an spiritual empowerment of English.
Just like Native English speakers enjoy sharing their creativeness through writings,
Non-native speakers love to share their idea through their creative writings as well.
The term "creative writings" here not only refers to writings for professional literary writers including novelists, poets, playwrights,
but also expands its referent to others including us, ordinary people posting their thoughts on SNS or blogging their daily experiences.
In this respect, creativity in writings is quite familiar to most of people.
But when non-native speakers write, their writings are likely to be evaluated based only on their linguistic proficiencies.
If we were to evaluate one creative writing written by a non-native English speaker,
we, as readers, often would become blind to the greatness or creativeness of the content the creative writing has.
Instead, we might try to point mistakes in grammars and vocabularies in the writing,
Can a person become creative only when she/he has proficiency in English?
I believe that creative writings by non-native speakers also have a right to be granted
a status of "great work" based on their contents.
It's not about the "accurate" use of grammars or "correct" sentence structure,
which often implies conformity to the native speakers' English.
Writing in English here is only as a means of the medium to spread writers' thoughts, opinions experience, and idea.
It is to share what is constructed in their mind of their first languages.
ELF writers share their world of their first languages and other languages they represent.
Such writings will be the door for other ELF readers to enter the new world.
Participants in ELF communication embrace varieties of English
and try to understand each other with great respect.
I believe that such interaction with variable uses of Englishes is the valuable moment of intercultural communication.
I hope that you enjoy the beautiful pieces of writings.
